NI-BC Certification Crosswalk and Study Guide

Use: This appendix maps the textbook to the certification knowledge areas. It does not replace ANCC’s official eligibility or examination information.

B.1 — Current Examination Blueprint

The current ANCC Informatics Nursing examination contains 150 questions, of which 125 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest questions. The scored blueprint is distributed across three domains:

Exam-study emphasis

You should be able to apply these concepts to scenarios rather than only define them. When a question describes stakeholder resistance, legal access, scope, change strategy, equity, or systems failure, identify the underlying principle before choosing the action.

Exam-study emphasis

For lifecycle scenarios, ask: Where are we in the lifecycle, what evidence should exist at this stage, who should participate, and what risk is the question testing? The best answer often follows disciplined lifecycle sequencing rather than a technically possible shortcut.

Exam-study emphasis

Do not memorize acronyms without function. Be able to answer: What problem does this standard or technology solve, what does it not solve, and what failure occurs when it is used incorrectly?

Pass 1 — Build the model of the discipline

Read Chapters 1–4. Focus on scope, systems thinking, evidence, law, ethics, and governance.

Pass 2 — Master the lifecycle

Read Chapters 5–9 as one continuous system. Be able to explain how a need becomes a requirement, design, test, implementation, support process, and optimization cycle.

Pass 3 — Master data and technology

Read Chapters 10–16. Build functional understanding instead of memorizing isolated acronyms.

Pass 4 — Add modern AI depth

Read Chapters 17–18 and Appendix A. Some AI detail exceeds the current blueprint; it is included because informatics practice is moving faster than certification outlines.

Pass 5 — Integrate at leadership level

Read Chapters 19–21. These chapters reinforce management, collaboration, governance, professional development, and systems-level judgment.

B.7 — How to Use the Retrieval Checkpoints for Exam Preparation

After each lesson:

  1. Answer the questions without reopening the lesson.
  2. Explain the answer in your own words rather than reciting a phrase.
  3. When the question asks “why,” include the mechanism.
  4. When it presents a scenario, identify the relevant lifecycle stage or conceptual distinction.
  5. Reopen the lesson only after committing to an answer.
  6. Mark topics you could recognize but could not explain; recognition is weaker than retrieval.

B.8 — Current Eligibility Snapshot

As of the 2026 publication date, ANCC lists requirements that include:

  • a current active RN license in a U.S. state/territory or professional legally recognized equivalent in another country;
  • a bachelor’s or higher degree in nursing;
  • equivalent of two years full-time RN practice;
  • 30 hours of informatics nursing continuing education within the prior three years;
  • and one of several qualifying informatics practice/graduate-education pathways.

Because certification requirements can change, verify current eligibility directly with ANCC before planning an application.

B.9 — Certification Boundary

This textbook deliberately exceeds the exam blueprint in areas such as:

  • enterprise architecture;
  • AI/LLM implementation and governance;
  • agentic systems;
  • cybersecurity resilience;
  • portfolio and vendor strategy;
  • advanced data governance;
  • executive communication;
  • digital transformation.

That excess is intentional. The goal is to prepare the reader for informatics practice, with NI-BC preparation embedded—not to reduce the field to test preparation.
